ASU: An Inside View
Each year, Angelo State University’ Office of Communications and Marketing distributes about 180 news releases to local and area news media. These range from headline news about new degree programs, new facilities, large grants and donor gifts, and top student and faculty achievements – to announcements of upcoming campus events, including concerts, theatre productions and public speaker presentations.
But there is so much more happening on the ASU campus.
Through this monthly column, we will offer an inside look of some of the other programs, student and faculty activities, and campus events that aren’t necessarily headline news, but are still vital to providing ASU students with a first-class education and total college experience. We will also provide links for readers who would like to see more details and photos.
Some of the highlights so far this year include:
PT Students Complete Winter Study Abroad Trip to Mexico
Eight ASU physical therapy students completed a two-week study abroad trip to Oaxaca, Mexico, where they conducted musculoskeletal examination and treatment for patients of all ages in the underserved area in and around the community of Huayapam. The students worked out of a local school in Huayapam, where they set up multiple treatment rooms in the classrooms to conduct their evaluations and treatments.
There was also a cultural component to the students’ trip as they toured archeological ruins, visited a hand-made-textiles facility, were introduced to local traditional healing practices, and were given a presentation on the Mexican healthcare system.
Pre-Med Students Host Annual JAMP Health Fair
During the spring semester, ASU students in the Joint Admission Medical Program (JAMP) hosted dozens of campus and community departments and organizations for the 12th annual JAMP Health Fair in the Houston Harte University Center. The purpose of the fair is to increase ASU students’ awareness of available medical, counseling, fitness, wellness, disability, mental health and other healthcare-related services available on campus and in the community.
JAMP is a statewide program that helps economically disadvantaged students get into Texas medical schools. Angelo State’s program is highly successful and has been the model for programs at other colleges and universities around the state.
Business Grads Land Prestigious First Jobs
Two recent graduates of Angelo State’s Norris-Vincent College of Business have both earned positions as assistant national bank examiners with the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC).
Harmanprit Singh of Howard Beach, N.Y., who earned his Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) in finance, joined the OCC’s New York City office. Kayla Wooten of Georgetown, Texas, who earned her B.B.A. in marketing and a Certificate in Banking, joined the OCC’s San Antonio office.
The OCC charters, regulates and supervises all national banks and federal savings associations, as well as federal branches and agencies of foreign banks. The OCC is an independent bureau of the U.S. Department of the Treasury and is led by the Comptroller of the Currency.
Nursing FNP Graduates Post 100% Pass Rate on Certification Exams
The ASU Nursing Department was notified this spring that its 2024 cohort of graduates of the Family Nurse Practitioner master’s degree and certificate programs posted a perfect passing rate on their FNP certification exams. The cohort included 15 graduates, 11 who earned a Master of Science in Nursing-Family Nurse Practitioner (M.S.N.-FNP) degree and four who earned a FNP Certificate.
Each of the graduates then completed a FNP certification exam through either the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) Certification Board or the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) – and 100% of them passed to earn their FNP credentials.
New M.S.W. Transfer Partnership with Howard Payne University
ASU recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Howard Payne University in Brownwood to create a streamlined pathway for HPU graduates with a Bachelor of Social Work (B.S.W.) degree to enter ASU’s Master of Social Work (M.S.W.) degree program.
When HPU students complete the final 60 hours of their social work bachelor’s degree with at least a 3.0 GPA and meet all ASU application requirements, they are now eligible for direct admission to Angelo State’s M.S.W. program, which is available either in person or totally online.
And these are just a sampling of the many positive and impactful activities and accomplishments that occur regularly throughout the ASU campus. We hope you will join us each month for another inside view of ASU that you won’t find anywhere else.
