Influential Midland resident Clarence Scharbauer III died Oct. 22 at the age of 74, according to a recent obituary from Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home.
He was born on June 6, 1951 to Dorothy Turner Scharbauer and Clarence Scharbauer Jr. in Midland, and after graduating from Midland High School in 1969, where he lettered in both baseball and football, he attended Texas Christian University where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity graduating in 1973 with a degree in business management.
Upon graduating, Scharbauer returned to Midland to join his family’s oil & gas, ranching and real estate development business, which he oversaw until his passing.
Noted for his philanthropic nature, Scharbauer served on the boards of than a dozen educational and charitable entities, most notably SBC Corporation where he served as Chairman, the Scharbauer Foundation where he served as trustee, the Abel-Hanger Foundation and the Midland College Foundation to name but a few.
In his obituary, Scharbauer was remembered as an extraordinarily talented and generous man with a self-deprecating sense of humor and who never met a stranger.
A memorial service for Scharbauer is set for 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 3, at First Baptist Church of Midland, 2104 W. Louisiana, with arrangements by Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home.
