Cannon Salutes to Mark Armed Forces Day at Fort Concho

Fort Concho will celebrate Armed Forces Day on Saturday, May 17, with hourly cannon firings from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. near the site’s Visitor Center at Barracks 1, 630 South Oakes St.

There will be additional displays of military weaponry, an activity booklet for younger visitors, and three special exhibits in the Barracks 1 Visitor Center. The fort’s additional eight exhibit buildings will be open from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

This holiday was designed to pay tribute to those currently serving in our armed forces in our nation and across the world. All active-duty military and their families will be admitted free this day.

ASU Hosts Dedication for Newly Renovated Murphey Auditorium

Angelo State University hosted a dedication and reopening ceremony Monday for its newly renovated Elta Joyce Murphey Auditorium inside the Mayer Administration Building, 2601 W. Ave. N.

The restoration project was funded in part by noted local philanthropist and arts enthusiast Elta Joyce McAfee, and the auditorium is commemorated under her maiden name of Murphey to honor her contribution and her family. The renovations include upgrades to virtually every aspect of the 11,681-square-foot facility.

Measles Cases in WT Number 717 Since Outbreak Began

The Texas Department of State Health Services is reporting 717 cases of measles have been confirmed since late January. That number represents an increase of nine cases since last week’s update.

Officials say a total of 93 of the patients have been hospitalized over the course of the outbreak, emphasizing that number is not the current number of measles patients in the hospital.

There have been two fatalities in school-aged children who lived in the outbreak area. The children were not vaccinated and had no known underlying conditions.

Due to the highly contagious nature of this disease, additional cases are likely to occur in the outbreak area and the surrounding communities.

Based on the most recent data, DSHS has identified designated outbreak counties with ongoing measles transmission: Cochran, Dallam, Dawson, Gaines, Lamar, Lubbock, Terry and Yoakum. Garza and Lynn counties have been removed from the list of designated outbreak counties because it has been 42 days, or two incubation periods, since the last case was infectious.

Less than one percent, or fewer than 10 of the confirmed cases, are estimated to be actively infectious since their rash onset date was less than a week ago.

Individuals are infectious four days prior to and four days after rash onset.
