MEET THE CANDIDATES

EDITOR’S NOTE: As 2026 shapes up as a historic midterm year, The Concho Observer’s will be publishing questionnaires sent to local candidates for our “Meet the Candidate” series.

Name: Leland Lacy (R)

Running for: Republican Nomination for Tom Green County Judge, County Court At Law No. 1

Why are you running/seeking re-election?

Webb, Stokes & Sparks Personal Injury Law

Electing a judge who can keep this docket running smoothly is very, very important to you, me and everyone in our community, directly or indirectly. I have been honored to serve the people of Tom Green County as a prosecutor for 20 years. That has given me very intensive courtroom experience with all of the many areas of law that a County Court at Law judge presides over.

I am running because it is a natural progression. I am well prepared to sit on the bench and I have a strong commitment to the continued efficiency and integrity of this court. I have served the voters for 20 years and I will enjoy continuing to serve, just in a different seat in the courtroom!

What are your top priorities?

When I first started, the process from filing charges to starting a trial was much shorter than it is now. A slow docket puts a strain on our whole legal system. My top priority is to do everything possible to keep the court moving more quickly and efficiently. And that is where having the time spent in management within the county system is an advantage over a judge who has only ever been in private practice.

What issues have constituents told you they were concerned about?

Whether they are prosecutors or defense attorneys, family law, probate; the efficiency of the court impacts all our local attorneys and each of their clients. These concerns I have are not mine alone. So I have shared conversations with countless other attorneys as well as people from all walks of life.

On a broader level, what I hear from people is an opposition to “judicial activism”. And I agree. Judges do not make law. I have the temperament to remain impartial personally and politically, and my actions during my career clearly demonstrate that.

Tom Green County Judge, County Court at Law No. 1 is currently occupied by Judge Ben Nolen, who announced his retirement last year. Lacy will face Jana Johnson and Jessica Skinner in the Republican Primary.
