This week marks the end of an extraordinary era at the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo Association, as one of its most beloved members, Kermit Wendland, steps into retirement.
With a heart full of gratitude and decades of service behind him, Kermit leaves behind a lasting legacy that has shaped not only the fairgrounds but also the countless lives he has touched throughout the years.
Kermit’s journey with the Association began in 1971, when he volunteered in the Cattle Department. Over time, he evolved from a passionate volunteer into a vital pillar of the organization, serving as Operations Director.
For more than 50 years, Kermit has given his time, talent, and heart to the Stock Show and Rodeo, all while maintaining the humble spirit that has made him such a respected figure.
Kermit’s Roots Run Deep
Raised in Miles, Texas, Kermit is a proud graduate of Miles High School and Texas A&M University, where he earned a B.S. degree in Agriculture. His roots in agriculture run deep—growing up in a family cattle operation and actively participating in 4-H and FFA livestock shows.
That background laid the foundation for his lifelong commitment to youth agriculture programs and cattle shows, which remain close to his heart to this day.
Whether managing day-to-day operations of the Association or overseeing rental events on the fairgrounds, Kermit has always approached his work with steadfast dedication and a positive spirit. As anyone who’s worked with him knows, if the sun is up, Kermit is already at work—tirelessly tending to the details that keep the organization running smoothly.
Faith and Community
Outside of his professional life, Kermit is equally passionate about his faith and community. He leads a Bible study group at his church and finds peace spending time in the country, enjoying the beauty of nature—a reflection of the grounded, sincere man he is.
In 2014, the Kermit Wendland Scholarship was established by former presidents of the Association as a tribute to Kermit’s enduring impact.
Funded by a generous private donation, the $20,000 scholarship—awarded to one deserving student each year—serves as a testament to his dedication to youth, education, and agriculture. It stands as a fitting legacy for a man who has always put others first and believed wholeheartedly in the power of the livestock show program.
As Kermit steps away from his official role, he leaves behind not just a well-run organization, but a deep well of respect and admiration from all who have had the pleasure of working with him. He is, and always will be, the heart of the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo Association.
The San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo Association thanks Kermit, for his decades of service, leadership, and unwavering dedication. He will be dearly missed, but his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
