OBITUARY

John Elkin Baggett Jr., 69, was a Fixer, Optimist, Lover, Provider, Husband, Father, Grandfather, Caretaker, Hair Stylist, Maintenance Man, Friend, Landlord, Inspiration, and Follower of Jesus.

Born in Sanford North Carolina October 11, 1955, to Sara Joann Douglas and John Elkin Baggett. Following the Army, early in John’s life they moved to Fort Bliss, at El Paso, where he spent the formative years of youth and graduated from Irvin High school in 1976.

After a short time working at Competition Motors repairing Volkswagens, John attended Texas Cosmetology School on a scholarship as the only male in his class, and then accepted a job with Sarita and Barry Bolding at The Rage Hair Salon in San Angelo, TX.

With a passion for his work and a drive to succeed John built a clientele and took ownership of the Rage in 1980 just before meeting Karen Gayle Collins who became his Wife and the only true love of his life.

Together John and Karen took ownership of Total Image Hair Salon in 1982 where they operated the salon and worked side by side as stylists. John and Karen became an inseparable team remembered together for providing opportunities to young stylists and a stable workplace for San Angelo’s top stylists.

Karen’s unfortunate death from Melanoma November 22, 2010, was as described by John as “the only hurdle I couldn’t make it over”.

After a long battle with Prostate Cancer on October 6, 2025, John left this world with love in his heart to rejoin Karen and best friend, Jesus of Nazareth in Heaven. John is survived by his and Karen’s two children, Collin Baggett and Sara Mattis both of San Angelo; and two grandchildren, Vance Mattis and Jaxson Mattis.

Service will be held in San Angelo, beside Karen’s grave block 60 in Fairmont Cemetery on Tuesday October 14, 2025, at 10:00 AM led by longtime friend and pastor Kirt Dauphin.

May John and Karen, together, finally rest in peace as their spirits are remembered by the life’s they touched, and the legacy left behind.
