Angelo State University’s Jazz Ensemble hosts their first “Jazz Combo Jam Session” of the fall from 4-6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at The House of FiFi DuBois, 123 S. Chadbourne St. in downtown San Angelo.

Styled less like a traditional concert and more like an open jam session, the event is free and open to the public. An ASU Jazz Combo will perform from 4-5 p.m., showcasing an eclectic mix of jazz standards, contemporary tunes and improvisation.

Following the Jazz Combo performance, the stage will be opened up for anyone in the audience who would like to join in with the Jazz Combo for a jam session.

“This jam session will feature student musicians exploring the art of improvisation, swinging through jazz standards, and creating spontaneous moments of music-making,” said Dr. Trent Shuey, director of the Jazz Ensembles program.

Jeff Chandler Law

“Come enjoy a relaxed, vibrant atmosphere, support local talent, and experience the energy of jazz in real time. It’s a great opportunity for our students to perform, connect with fellow musicians and keep the jazz tradition alive.”

The ASU Jazz Combo will feature students performing on trumpet, saxophone, trombone, guitar, piano, bass and drums, along with Shuey on vibraphone. All musicians, whether students, professionals or just passionate jazz fans, are encouraged to bring their instruments and join in the open jam session.
