Walter Juliff, who recently retired after a 50-year coaching and scouting career, has joined the Board of Trustees for the Angelo State University Foundation.

A 1976 and 1981 ASU graduate, Juliff was a graduate assistant coach for the Angelo State Rams football team that won the 1978 NAIA National Championship and advanced to the national semifinals in 1979. He came to ASU on a track scholarship and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1976 and his Master of Arts in Teaching in 1981. He also holds a business master’s degree from the University of Texas.

Upon leaving ASU, Juliff coached for a couple years in high school and at UT before spending 39 years in the NFL with the Blesto Scouting Combine, Pittsburgh Steelers, Dallas Cowboys and Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders. In 31 years with the Cowboys, he served in numerous roles on the personnel staff, including southeast area scout, national scout, and assistant director of college and pro scouting. He also directed college free agent signings from 1992-2000.

In those various posts, Juliff helped develop the rosters for three Cowboys Super Bowl Championships in 1992, 1993 and 1995, three NFC Championships, eleven NFC East Championships and 16 playoff appearances. He worked for every head coach in the franchise history of the Cowboys until 2019, including Hall of Famers Tom Landry, Jimmy Johnson and Bill Parcells. He also worked for another Hall of Fame head coach, Chuck Noll, in Pittsburgh.

Following his time in Dallas, Juliff finished his NFL career as senior advisor to the general manager of the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders. He then served as a personnel consultant for the University of Georgia Bulldogs and the Senior Bowl, and from 2023-25, he served as senior personnel executive for the Texas A&M Aggies. He and his wife, Beth, live in Southlake.

“We are excited to welcome Walter Juliff to the ASU Foundation Board,” said Jamie Mayer, vice president for external affairs. “His 50-year career in coaching and scouting – including nearly four decades in the NFL with the Steelers, Cowboys and Raiders – brings unique experience and perspective that will greatly benefit the foundation and Angelo State.”
