As a big fan of artisanal breads, I tend to have a knack for seeking out the best mom and pop bakeries in town and on my many travels. Those located right here in San Angelo and the Concho Valley however, get first dibs since I can try them more often and help support local business owners right here at home. Bread & Blooms Bakery is just such an example of a small business bakery that is putting out some amazing artisanal baked goods for all of us locals to devour and savor to our hearts content.

Although this little shop (and I mean little) may be small in size, it is huge in flavor and quality. After sampling the fresh baked sourdough bread and a cinnamon roll last weekend, I can attest that this place has some terrific goodies! I cannot wait to go back again to try more of what they make here.

As many of you already know by now, I do not consume much of any bread/flour at all. Only a true, slow fermentation sourdough bread fits the bill. Any other bread/flour tends to put me right to sleep, tis not the case with sourdough breads.

Therefore, I take my baked goods hunting and consuming very seriously as only the really good authentic stuff will do it for me.

Let me show you why I think Bread & Blooms Bakery is a place you must go check out soon if not done so already.

Opened in mid-August 2024, this little shop has just gotten it’s start in the former (and very popular) spot known as Slang’n Dough located near the corner of S. Chadbourne and 3rd St in downtown San Angelo.

Owner and head baker Nicole Hernandez was inspired to start the business after getting pressured from friends and family to start a bakery and sell her amazing baked goods to the public. Already a passionate baker at heart, she took the dive and the rest is history in the making.

The business was formed from my fondest memories of family times and the special baked foods we prepared during those unique occasions and holidays.

Now that same little corner shop is once again filled with the irresistible aroma of fresh baked breads, cinnamon rolls, muffins, scones, cupcakes, and more!

All the baked goods are prepared in small batches and made fresh daily. Nicole only prepares for what she expects to sell that day and only makes more if she needs to based on daily demand. This allows her to waste less and keep costs down not to mention the limits of the small space she has to work with.

According to Nicole, they mix the enduring ethics of West Texas culture and its regional people; an excellent product with genuinely friendly service, all at a fair price.

Bread and Blooms Bakery is not striving to be different but to be the best representative of our family heritage as possible. I use older recipes that have not changed in three generations starting with my grandmother.

“We pride ourselves on being a smaller business because we are able to take local requests and suggestions and bring them to life for our customers. We are committed to being a part of the community and serving the community which we live in. We do this through our delicious baked goods and putting smiles on peoples faces.”

For all of you first time goers who have not been into the shop yet, here is some good advice from Nicole on what to try. “First timers might like to try the traditional or jalapeno sourdough bread, the cinnamon rolls, or the kolaches made with locally with Mikulik sausage. You cannot go wrong with those items.”

I should mention that every week and sometimes daily, you can look to see what items are being made and put out for sale that day or later that week with the quantities available. Being a first come-first serve operation, be ready to get over there and nab what you can because it goes fast and that is very likely because its just that darn good!

Stay tuned for daily menu updates and announcements by following the Bread & Bloom Bakery social channels on Facebook and Instagram.

Bakery hours are 8-1pm Tuesday through Sunday or, until they sell out. (Hint: go early, especially on weekends!)
