The San Angelo Independent School District’s Board of Trustees meet at 5:45 p.m., Monday April 21, in the Second Floor Board Room of the SAISD Administration Building, 1621 University Ave.
Among the top items of interest will be discussion on Head Start Programming Considerations.
What is Head Start?
Head Start is a federally funded program for early childhood education (pre-school). It is primarily for children from low-income families. It’s purpose is to increase a child’s readiness to begin kindergarten. Early childhood education is considered the most important factor in determining how successful a child will be in school.
Head Start is operated by the Concho Valley Council of Governments (CVCOG). It uses two now-closed San Angelo elementary schools for its program – Day and Rio Vista.
At the pre-agenda meeting on April 14, SAISD Superintendent Dr. Christopher Moran gave a quick overview of this topic to the board. The cost to maintain Day and Rio Vista for the use of Head Start exceeds the amount of funding received from CVCOG for the use of the buildings.
The district and CVCOG are in discussions about a way to provide better facilities for Head Start that will also increase services for those children and families.
During the pre-agenda meeting last Monday Moran said that staff would present a “bold plan.”
Also on the agenda:
- Update on academic programs
- Update on Teacher Incentive Allotment (TIA) Expansion Application
- Update on TEA Accountability Rating
- Continuing Education hours for School Board members
- Replacement of Lave View Chiller
