The City of San Angelo has announced the retirement of Bob Salas, Neighborhood and Family Services Director. He has been with the City for eighteen years. During his time with the City, Bob created the Neighborhood & Family Services Department, which includes community development, social services, code compliance, animal services and WIC. He worked to eliminate veteran homelessness in our community and oversaw affordable housing projects that made more than 400 apartments available to low-to-moderate income residents.

On a personal note, Bob Salas joined the City around the same time I was first elected to the City Council. We cut our teeth in city government together. Bob probably made more of a difference to the ordinary citizens in this community than all Mayors and City Council members since 2006 combined. Mayors and council members come and go, but staff like Bob will be hard to replace.

This may sound like hyperbole, but I truly mean it. He made San Angelo a better place than when he found it. He was instrumental in helping the City identify its targeted neighborhoods for redevelopment, addressing the issues of our homeless citizens and cleaning up our City. Many people in San Angelo would be without a roof over their heads if it had not been for Bob and his tireless work at the City, and with other organizations and stakeholders like the San Angelo Housing Authority, West Texas Organizing Strategies, Galillee Community Development Corporation and Habitat for Humanity. He will be sorely missed and leaves some very big shoes to fill.

Best of luck Bob!
