Ida Brown, a recent member of the USA Shooting National Team, has been appointed the first full-time professional head coach for the Angelo State University Shotgun Sports Team, formerly the Rams Clay Target Team.
ASU Shotgun Sports is an official university competitive club sport, and the team is made up of student-athletes in academic majors across campus. It annually competes against teams from throughout the U.S. in the ACUI/SCTP Collegiate Clay Target Series sponsored by the Association of College Unions International (ACUI) and the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP).
Brown comes to Angelo State after serving as an assistant coach for the Shooting Sports Team at Iowa Central Community College, which finished among the top five in seven different categories at the 2025 ACUI/SCTP National Championships in March. Prior to that, she enjoyed her own successful collegiate shooting career at Hillsdale College in Michigan as part of the team that won 2021 and 2024 ACUI national championships.
While still a college student, Brown also competed at the national level in events sponsored by the National Sporting Clays Association (NSCA) and was twice selected for the USA Shooting Women’s National Team. As a member of the national team, she earned a Team Silver Medal at the 2022 International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup in Cyprus and a Team Gold Medal at the 2024 ISSF CAT Games in the Dominican Republic. She also competed at the 2023 USA Olympic Trials, finishing eighth in the Open Women’s division and second in the Collegiate Women’s division.
“I am very excited for the opportunity to coach the ASU Shotgun Sports Team,” Brown said. “The team has a long history of being competitive, and I am hoping to be able to give us the final push we need to bring home a national championship.”
Established in 2015 as the Rams Clay Target Team, the ASU Shotgun Sports Team has enjoyed significant success and growth over its first decade on campus, necessitating the need for a full-time professional head coach to continue its progression. Its student-athletes have posted multiple individual regional and national titles stretching back to 2016, as well as several team regional titles and two national runner-up placings in 2019 and 2021.
Additionally, ASU Shotgun Sports annually hosts the Rams Reload Sporting Clay Shoot each spring, with proceeds going to fund team operations, as well as scholarships specifically for team members. It will also host the new Clays on the Concho collegi ate sporting clays competition this fall on Nov. 15-16. More details on the team are available at angelo.edu/shotgun-sports.
Enhancing ASU Shotgun Sports with the hiring of its first professional coach is also a prime example of why securing funding to support competitive club sports and provide important student life programs is a priority for ASU’s ongoing “Leading the Charge” capital campaign heading into the university’s centennial celebration in 2028.
