The Angelo State University Jazz Ensemble will present its first concert of the fall season on Monday, Oct. 6, in ASU’s Elta Joyce Murphey Auditorium located inside the Mayer Administration Building at 2601 W. Ave. N.
Titled “Sugar & Spice,” the concert will begin at 7 p.m. and is free and open to the public. It will feature a high-energy mix of jazz, funk and soul that blends timeless classics with fiery grooves to celebrate the breadth and spirit of the jazz art form.
The musical program will include:
- “Superstition” by Stevie Wonder
- “Summertime” by George Gershwin
- “Coconut Champagne” by Maynard Ferguson
- “Tijuana Taxi” by Herb Alpert
- “The Preacher” by Horace Silver
- “Willow Crest” by Buddy Rich
- “Norwegian Wood” by The Beatles
- “Londonderry Air” – Irish folk song
Featuring jazz classics, pop favorites and crowd-pleasing surprises, “Sugar & Spice” is the perfect way to experience the energy and versatility of ASU’s Jazz Ensemble, which is made up of about 20 student musicians performing on saxophones, trumpets, trombones and tuba, as well as a full rhythm section. It is directed by Dr. Trent Shuey, ASU assistant director of bands.
The ASU Jazz Ensembles program offers diverse and creative, small- and large-group jazz performance experiences. It covers a wide range of styles, including bebop, Latin jazz, free jazz, funk, hip hop and many others. ASU is proud to offer performances in this uniquely American art form.
Night at the Museum:
Angelo State University’s Mayer Museum will host its first “Night at the Museum” program of the fall on Tuesday, Oct. 7, in the Mayer Museum at 2501 W. Ave. N.
Night at the Museum will run from 5-8 p.m. and is free and open to community members of all ages. For this installment, the museum will join with the ASU Association of Mexican American Students (AMAS) to celebrate Dia de los Muertos. Activities will include:
- 5-6 p.m. – DIY Sugar Skulls with ASU Spanish Club
- 6 p.m. – ASU Mariachi Los Pastores performance
- 6:30 p.m. – ASU Danza de Oro ballet folklorico performance
Other family-friendly and educational activities scheduled throughout the evening include:
- Ofrenda Display curated by AMAS
- Monarch Butterfly Project, STEM Projects with Tri-Beta biology honor society
- Calavera Noisemakers with Kappa Pi and Friday Night Art Club
- Experiments and Activity Table with the Society of Physics Students
- Virtual Reality Activities with the College of Science and Engineering
Subsequent ASU Night at the Museum events will be offered on Tuesdays, Nov. 4 and Dec. 2.
