The Angelo State University Jazz Ensemble will present its first concert of the fall season on Monday, Oct. 6, in ASU’s Elta Joyce Murphey Auditorium located inside the Mayer Administration Building at 2601 W. Ave. N.

Titled “Sugar & Spice,” the concert will begin at 7 p.m. and is free and open to the public. It will feature a high-energy mix of jazz, funk and soul that blends timeless classics with fiery grooves to celebrate the breadth and spirit of the jazz art form.

The musical program will include:

  • “Superstition” by Stevie Wonder
  • “Summertime” by George Gershwin
  • “Coconut Champagne” by Maynard Ferguson
  • “Tijuana Taxi” by Herb Alpert
  • “The Preacher” by Horace Silver
  • “Willow Crest” by Buddy Rich
  • “Norwegian Wood” by The Beatles
  • “Londonderry Air” – Irish folk song

Featuring jazz classics, pop favorites and crowd-pleasing surprises, “Sugar & Spice” is the perfect way to experience the energy and versatility of ASU’s Jazz Ensemble, which is made up of about 20 student musicians performing on saxophones, trumpets, trombones and tuba, as well as a full rhythm section. It is directed by Dr. Trent Shuey, ASU assistant director of bands.
