The City has denied that 45 dogs were euthanized yesterday at the Animal Shelter. Social media posts spread a wild rumor that the shelter euthanized 45 dogs yesterday, Feb. 26. The City said that is not correct. Shelter staff did euthanize 15 dogs yesterday – one for medical reasons and 14 because they were aggressive.
The City of San Angelo also announced this morning that, in an effort to improve public safety and address the number of stray dogs, Animal Services has removed intake barriers for San Angelo residents. By doing this, the City hopes to reduce the number of loose dogs on the street, helping make the community safer. Changes were effective Wednesday, Feb. 26.
The 180-dog and 120-cat capacity limit will remain in place to maintain reasonable operational care by the limited shelter staff. The current euthanasia list will also continue with its March 1 deadline.
Animal surrenders are still open to residents within San Angelo city limits only. The shelter will accept surrenders from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding approved City holidays.
Residents wishing to surrender a found animal can bring the animal to the shelter, contact other rescues for intake, or join the Good Samaritan program by temporarily caring for the pet until placement is arranged.
